Saåad - Pink Sabbath EP
Some dark ambient/drone. The hints of distortion add to the texture making it a really lonely listening experience. Like being in an old house.

some hyperbolic prose from boomkat [http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=288721 ]

The two opening tracks, ‘Shimmer’ and ‘Fervent’ establish a beatless soundscape of immense depth and scope, demonstrating a kinship with shoegaze or dream-pop style guitar-based ambience. The likes of Kevin Shields and Robin Guthrie have probably had as much impact on Irissari’s sound as any Wolfgang Voigt record. The first beats arrive during ‘Through The Gaps In The Land’, fading in through the nebulous mesh of electronic tones, blurry, abstract guitar and field-recorded sources. The sound is incredibly warm and punchy, and paradoxically it convulses with massive amounts of energy depite retaining the serene ambient feel.

why the hell not…

ALO Grado sr225 modified headphones. From aloaudio.com. Unfortunately, not available in Australia. US jobs only. beautiful though.

We take a brand new Grado SR225 and re cable the headphone cable with the larger 18 gauge JenaLabs Cryo Wires and 2 18 gauge ALO SXC Cryo silver wires, terminate to your choice of plugs, 1/4 or 3.5mm. The headphone cable is 6 feet, contact me for longer lengths. Then we remove the cheap plastic cups and replace them with a choice of beautifully hand turned wood cups. We then rescreen the cups and resemble them to give you a unique and incredible sounding headphone, own one of these headphone classics!

william basinski - vivian & ondine

thanks to a friend, I have just put this on for the first time. (:

[from http://www.mmlxii.com/music/music.html ]

“…I got back to work and found yet another lunchbox of ancient tape-loops to go through for possible inclusion in the new piece. I came across the main theme and thought…well, this is gorgeous; let’s see if we can use this to coax Viv to come out. I went through the rest of them and found another dozen or so that mixed well used randomly, just under the threshold.

“The next night I performed the piece at Issue with their 16 channel hemispherical speaker system set to move the sounds randomly around the room as if waves in a pool. We all had a really good time. It was mesmerizing.”

This version was recorded with microphones and two Norelco tape decks live in my studio in Los Angeles in one take in September 2008.
